Kate Lowman - Biography

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Lowman grew up in Wisconsin and then moved to the East Coast.  After completing a master’s degree at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, she worked as an editor in Washington D.C.  Subsequently, she spent seven years building and managing a pro-choice political group in West Virginia.

Lowman has lived in Florida for the past 11 years, primarily in Sarasota.  Locally she has been involved as a neighborhood advocate and is currently chair of the CCNA (Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations). She has been actively involved in several local political campaigns

Lowman spent thirty years studying quilts and working with textiles.  She has long been fascinated by the importance of color and pattern, the reflective quality of different fabrics (particularly silk), and the role of ornamentation and embellishment.  Using photocollage as a medium allows her to apply lessons derived from the textile arts, but with enormous flexibility.  The core issues of quilt design, including color, balance, repetition and detail, are primary influences, but now the exploration of reflection can extend to glass, metal, tiles, and of course, lights themselves.
