Jose Chardiet - Vessel Series

Chardiet's newest body of work returns to a category of sculpture he embraced at the beginning of his career: the blown-glass vessel. Early in his artistic explorations, Chardiet was fascinated by Native American pottery, especially Hopi ceramics. Today, his work emulates those unique forms in glass, with special attention to an evocation of the haunting feeling of timelessness that surrounds unearthed archaeological treasures.

Combining his interest in drawing and metal with glass, the creative process begins with artist drawings in a sketchbook. Working from these sketches, Chardiet continues by crafting copper wire designs and copper cutouts to provide detail to his concept. These designs and cutouts are then applied to hot blown glass.  After his pieces have annealed, or cooled, Chardiet sandblasts the surfaces to reveal and expose the copper drawings. Finally, the artist acid-etches the forms giving them a velvet-like texture.
