Kathy Poeppel and Dick Moiel - Artist Statement

Our relationship with glass started with collecting and a love for the objects that capture the energy of the creative process.  We were curious about the process of making.  The magic and mystery in the fluid nature of molten glass evoked wonder from first exposure.

Vessels are primal.  As ritual objects they confine, conceal, protect and preserve.  As a metaphor for the body they define self-contained vulnerability.  Their association with function conjures a narrative of daily use that is ordinary and essential.

Our exploration of the vessel, applies contemporary innovations to glassblowing traditions.  Defining process and refining technique guide our explorations in glass.  At the core of this endeavor is the joy we find in working together. The teamwork of our medical professions carries over.  We come back to the process; the magic of working with the material; the meditative quality of sustained focus; and a rewarding collaborative effort.
